The Power of Serve and Return in Early Childhood Development

When it comes to building a strong foundation for a child’s learning and lifelong wellbeing, serve and return interactions are one of the most powerful tools we have. You don’t need fancy toys, expensive programs, or even hours of structured teaching. What children need most—especially in the first five years of life—is consistent, responsive interaction with the people around them. What is Serve and Return? Think of it like a game of tennis or ping-pong. The child “serves” by making a sound, gesture, facial expression, or question. The adult “returns” by noticing, responding, and engaging.
